Listen Up Arsenal - Here Are The Teams That Have Stopped Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona At The Camp Nou

2008–2009
Barcelona 1-1 Racing Santander
(September 13, La Liga)
Barcelona's disappointment at suffering a defeat to Numancia on the opening day of the season continued against Racing as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home. Guardiola's team struggled in attack and failed to make their dominance count, needing a 71st minute penalty from Lionel Messi to break the deadlock. However, six minutes later Jonathan restored parity for the visitors.
Barcelona 1-1 Basel
(November 4, Champions League)
Messi, Xavi, Samuel Eto'o, Yaya Toure and Dani Alves all were left out of the starting line-up, and subsequently Barcelona struggled upfront and lacked the cutting edge, with Thierry Henry missing a number of good chances. Messi scored on 62 minutes and Pique then rattled the crossbar with a close-range header, but with eight minutes remaining Basel's perseverance paid off when Eren Derdiyok equalised.
Barcelona 1-1 Getafe
(November 23, La Liga)
Guardiola rested a number of first team players including Messi, and this allowed Getafe to conjure up a minor upset at the Camp Nou. Gerard Pique's mistake in defence allowed Manu to give the visitors the lead on 19 minutes, and even though Keita restored parity, the equaliser came only in the 71st minute. Barca dominated the proceedings but Bojan Krkic missed a series of chances, Samuel Eto'o hit the crossbar and Roberto Abbondanzieri made a number of saves for the Azulones.
Barcelona 2-3 Shakhtar Donetsk
(December 9, Champions League)
This was the final match in the group stage of the Champions League and Arsenal could be helped if they make this defeat their template for victory. Guardiola rested a number of his regulars and fielded the likes of veteran Sylvinho as well as youngsters VĂctor Vazquez and Bojan Krkic. They were easily brushed aside by the Ukranians, but Barca had already booked their place in the knockout stages.
Barcelona 1-2 Espanyol
(February 21, La Liga)
Barcelona were at a disadvantage in this derby encounter from the 38th minute onward after Seydou Keita was sent off. Two Ivan de la Pena goals in the space of four minutes early in the second half put the Blaugrana further on the back foot, and once again Barca's defence floundered.

Barcelona 0-0 Chelsea
(April 28, Champions League)
Then-Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink pledged to employ attacking tactics but the Blues started defending in numbers right from the start. The Premier League side allowed the Blaugrana to maintain possession but packed bodies in and around their penalty area, making it extremely tough for Guardiola's team to find space to weave their magic. However, a misplaced back pass by Rafael Marquez almost helped Didier Drogba score in the 38th minute. In the return leg in this semi-final tie, though, Barcelona breached Chelsea's thanks to an Andres Iniesta strike to progress to the final on away goals' rule.
Barcelona 3-3 Villarreal
(May 10, La Liga)
Barcelona were cruising to the victory and to the Spanish Primera Division title but after Eric Abidal was sent off on 77 minutes, the Blaugrana allowed a two-goal advantage to slip. Matias Fernandez's penalty and an injury time goal from Joseba Llorente saw Villarreal earn a memorable and entertaining 3-3 draw.
Barcelona 0-1 Osasuna
(May 23, La Liga)
It would be wrong to read too much into this game given that Barcelona had already secured their league title by the time they faced the relegation-threatened Pamplona side, who secured a famous 1-0 win in Catalunya.

2009–2010
Barcelona 1-2 Rubin Kazan
(October 20, Champions League)

Rubin Kazan have been Barcelona's bogey team (of sorts) in Europe since Guardiola's reign began, and they were the first team in 2009-10 to defeat the all-conquering Catalans at the Camp Nou. It was a masterclass in defensive rigidity from the Tatars, who played on the counter, made their chances count and stifled the then-European champions from playing too much productive passing football.
Barcelona 1-1 Villarreal
(January 2, La Liga)
Barcelona started the game with confidence and took the lead after just seven minutes through Pedro and continued to run the show, but once David Fuster had equalised for Villarreal six minutes into the second-half the Blaugrana started to flounder and lost their fluidity, and in the end were lucky to escape with a point.

Barcelona 1-2 Sevilla

(January 5, Copa del Rey)
Barcelona were without regular centre-backs Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique in their starting line-up and Sevilla, with their style of playing with a certain degree of physical strength and briskness, had Diego Capel, Diego Perotti and to some extent Jesus Navas making use of the extra space afforded by Dani Alves' and Maxwell's adventurous runs. Sevilla would often work closely in the middle and spread the ball wide to stretch Barcelona, and then play with intensity and momentum.
2010–2011
Barcelona 0-2 Hercules
(September 11, La Liga)
Hercules pulled off the shock of the 2010-11 Spanish Primera Division season in week 2 as Nelson Valdez struck twice to inflict a rare defeat upon Barca at the Camp Nou. Other than this being a case of one of those romantic upsets - a footballing version of David slaying Goliath - this match saw Hercules take their chances, punish the Spanish champions for not exploiting theirs and expose the truth that without their regulars the Blaugrana are not formidable.
Barcelona 1-1 Mallorca
(October 3, La Liga)
Xavi was injured and David Villa suspended, and Barcelona struggled to break down an organised Mallorca side for whom Emilio Nsue cancelled out Messi's 21st minute lead just before half time. Bojan hit the visitors' post but it didn't hide that the Blaugrana struggled and were depending on Messi more than they should have been.
Barcelona 0-0 Athletic Bilbao
(December 21, Copa Del Rey)
Joaquin Caparros's Athletic Bilbao were resolute in defence, playing with a back-four shielded by a five-man midfield, and the Basque giants produced a brilliant performance to hold Barca to a goalless draw in the first-leg of this round-of-16 tie. Athletic's discipline restricted Barca from playing their passing football and frustrated the Spanish champions.

Female 'Empowerment' Is Great — Except When it Comes to Smoking

What does "empowerment" mean for women around the globe? More smoking deaths, for one. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) reports that in countries where more women work in government office, have equal voting rights and relative parity to men in terms of income, women also smoke more.

The UNDP measured levels of national female empowerment in 74 countries. In countries with poor female empowerment scores, like China, Pakistan, Uganda and Saudi Arabia, men were five times more likely to smoke than women. By contrast, in countries like Australia, Canada, Sweden and the U.S., where women have made great strides toward gender equality, the unfortunate side effect is a parity of a different kind: women smoke almost as much as men do.

The study [PDF], published Tuesday in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, was the first to compare female empowerment and smoking rates. Going forward, rates of smoking in women are expected to rise in poor countries, closing the gender gap. Wrote the researchers:
While women's smoking prevalence rates are currently
lower than men's, they are projected to rise in many low- and middle-income countries. Data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey show that worldwide smoking rates among boys and girls resemble each other more than smoking rates among adult women and men, with boys between the ages of 13 and 15 years smoking only 2 to 3 times more than girls.
The Tobacco Free Initiative at WHO chose 2010 as the year to focus on the relationship between gender and tobacco use, given tobacco companies' aggressive marketing campaigns targeting women. "This study highlights the need to act quickly to curb smoking among women, particularly in developing countries," Dr. Douglas Bettcher, director of the Tobacco Free Initiative, said in a statement. "The tobacco epidemic is still in its early stages in many countries but is expected to worsen. Strong tobacco control measures such as bans on tobacco advertising are needed to prevent the tobacco industry from targeting women."

Worldwide, smoking kills 5 million people each year and is predicted to kill 1 billion people this century.

Karim Benzema Needs To Improve - Real Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho insists that striker Karim Benzema needs to improve to fulfil his true potential.

The France international forward has struggled for much of the 2010-11 campaign but he was on target in Madrid's 1-1 draw with Olympique Lyonnais in the first-leg of their last 16 tie in the Champions League this week.

However, Mourinho thinks the 23-year-old Benzema still has room for improvement and told Spanish daily AS, "Everyone knows his potential which is impressive.

"But everyone knows, and he himself knows it, because he is an intelligent boy, that during matches he still needs to improve certain aspects.

"He is working to improve. He is going in the right direction."

Benzema, though, was pleased with his goal against Lyon and, according to Madrid's official website, said, "My goal was important and made me very happy. I was very happy in Lyon and I couldn't celebrate the strike.

"All my team-mates hugged me because the goal gave us the advantage in the tie. I am working to play more. The coach gave me 27 minutes of playing time and I responded on the pitch."

Angalia vizuri weweeee!!!!

Mobile phones: How to 'keep your brain away from the antenna'

A government-funded study published Tuesday says radiation from mobile phones can change the way brains process sugar.
Is that a big deal? The scientists aren't sure, according to CNN Health's report. But our story has scary tidbits.

Like this quote, from Dr. Nora Volkow, the Journal of the American Medical Association study's lead author and a neuroscientist at the National Institutes of Health:
"The human brain is sensitive to the electromagnetic radiation emitted by cell phones, but for the brain to be impacted the cell phone has to be close to the antenna. So keep your brain away from the antenna."
In layman's terms: It's better to be safe than sorry, she says.
Despite years of research, there's still no conclusive proof cell phone radiation causes cancer and other health problems in the brain. Studies, some of them funded by the wireless industry, have produced contradictory findings.

But the nearly ubiquitous devices haven't been proven 100% safe either.
So, for the sake of argument, let's say you are worried about this and you do want to "keep your brain away from the antenna."
How do you actually do that?
Here are a few options, taken from an earlier CNN tip sheet and influenced by another from the Environmental Working Group, an advocacy organization:

Quit talking on the phone
In the age of "can you hear me now," this won't be easy. One workaround , however, is to send text messages instead of calling. Not only will this keep the phone in your hand and away from your brain, it may help you connect with that pint-sized niece of yours who has given up "verbaling" completely.

Wear headphones when you talk
Wearing headphones -- or those Bluetooth headsets -- when you're talking on the phone can cut down on your exposure to mobile phone radiation. The only downsides to this are sociological: It looks weird if you're talking to yourself in public; and tech-savvy friends may judge you for wearing a Bluetooth earpiece.

Buy a phone that emits less
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission sets a radiation threshold that all cell phones sold here must fall below. Industry groups say this level is plenty strict, maybe even too strict. But others say consumers should be informed about how much radiation their phones emit and, if they want, they should be able to purchase a lower-radiation phone.
San Francisco last year started requiring cell phone manufacturers to advertise radiation levels in stores. If you don't happen to live in the Bay Area, however, don't fret. The Environmental Working Group and CNET News both have posted online lists of cell phones and their radiation levels.
General rule of thumb: The smarter the phone, the more radiation.

Use the speaker function
This one is easy to forget. Say you don't have headphones with a built-in microphone and you don't want to buy a geeky Bluetooth headset. The obvious solution: Just use your mobile phone's speakerphone feature.
Bonus tip: This probably works better when you're alone than when you're sharing your conversation with the entire room.

Don't talk as much
Take this as literally as possible. It's not just how long you're on the phone, but how much time you spend talking in a phone conversation that actually contributes to the amount of radiation your phone emits, according to the Environmental Working Group.
Maybe it's a good time to work on some listening skills.
