Malawi charity staff to sue Madonna for unfair dismissal

London, March 28 : Pop diva Madonna, who dropped plans of building a school for girls in African nation, is now facing legal action for unfair dismissal from former employees of the Raising Malawi charity.

Madonna had been working on building a $15 million education facility in the village of Chinkhota through her charitable organisation. But the project has now been abandoned amid allegations of financial mismanagement, prompting Madonna to dismiss the foundation's board of directors.

However, the singer's representatives have since blamed former Raising Malawi executive director Philippe van den Bossche, who quit in October, for the mess.

But Madonna's actions have landed her in trouble with eight disgruntled employees at Raising Malawi taking their labour complaints to the country's industrial court, reports contactmusic. com.

The workers' lawyer, Mzondi Chirambo, said: "Their employment was terminated by the trustees of Raising Malawi Academy for Girls ostensibly following the change of plan not to build the school as planned. My clients are also being forced to sign a discriminatory termination agreement before they are paid their benefits."

Madonna has 14 days to respond to the claim, but the workers are likely to face a tough fight - the singer is looking into her own legal options and is considering filing suit against those involved in the failure of the school.(IANS)

'Nagging' Barcelona Are An Extremely Annoying Team - Arsenal's Robin Van Persie

Arsenal attacker Robin van Persie has slammed the behaviour of the Barcelona players.

Arsenal attacker Robin van Persie has looked back at the Gunners' Champions League round of 16 tie with Barcelona and has voiced his disappointment with the behaviour of the Catalan giants' players.

"I really didn’t understand all the fuss about the foul I committed on [Lionel] Messi. Everybody got angry with me, but I didn’t treat him any different than I treat other opponents. Nobody would have complained about it if I fouled Mascherano," said Van Persie to De Telegraaf.

"Meanwhile, the Barcelona players tend to nag about everything that happens on the pitch. I was a bit disappointed with that. It’s something that the Chelsea players do in England.

"Barcelona are still a fantastic team, but they should really stop nagging and complaining that much. That’s becoming extremely annoying on the pitch."

The Netherlands international also had plenty of positive words for the Spanish champions though.

"I have a lot of respect for Barcelona. Is it possible to match what Barcelona are doing? I rate Barcelona even higher than Spain’s national side. However, every team can be beaten. I never felt any less than the Barcelona players on the pitch."

Arsenal lost a first leg advantage to crash out of the Champions League to the Blaugrana, with Van Persie seeing red in the second half.

Book imagines what if Diana had faked her own death, started life anew

London, Mar 19: An author has written a book that imagines what would have happened had Princess Diana faked her own death and started life anew.

Monica Ali, whose first novel `Brick Lane' won rave reviews, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and became a global bestseller, has written the book `Untold Story'.
Ali uses a fictional princess in her new book based on Princess Diana and the fateful car accident she had in Paris in August 1997.

Diana is portrayed fulfilling her fantasy of living a free life and ten years on, living in a small town in the United States, flicking through magazines searching for pictures from London, for a glimpse of her old life.
Lydia, the assumed identity of Ali's protagonist, shares many things in common with Diana. Adored by millions, in her personal life she has suffered rejection, heartbreak and betrayal.
Ali wrote the book after doing some thorough research about Diana, and of the many aspects, she picked out three in particular.

The first was how rebellious Diana was, refusing to follow the rules of the Royal household.
The second aspect is the way that she suffered, and the way she reached out by sharing the details of her eating disorder and her husband's infidelities.

Thirdly, was how Diana longed to escape her life which was, despite how she kicked against it, suffocating in many ways.
"Of course, it is a fantasy, a fairy tale. Yes, I took my cue from Diana's escape fantasy," the Daily Mail quoted Ali as saying.
"But mainly, I was interested in exploring identity - that which makes a person who they are. How much of what shapes us is innate, and how much is determined by our environment.

"For which of us has not wondered, at some stress-filled point in our lives, what it would be like to walk out of one life and begin another? It's the Reggie Perrin syndrome: leave your clothes on the beach, disappear and begin again.

"Is it really possible to leave your troubles behind? That's what I wanted to explore. But I also wanted to pay tribute to one of the most extraordinary and misunderstood women in recent history," she stated.
`Untold Story' will be published on March 31 by Doubleday, at 16.99 pounds. (ANI)

Every Decision Referee Massimo Busacca Got Wrong - And Right - In Barcelona - Arsenal

Arsenal's defeat to Barcelona at the Camp Nou was not without incident, and referee Massimo Busacca was at the end of stinging criticism from Arsene Wenger and Robin van Persie following the match.

The north London club were furious with some of the decisions made by Busacca and Wenger believed his side would have progressed had it not been for the decision to send Van Persie off for time wasting.

But it is not just the Gunners who will feel hard done by the referee as Barcelona will claim they had a couple of key decisions go against them over the 90 minutes, so Goal.com UK takes a look back at the key incidents from the game in the Camp Nou to see whether Arsenal really got a raw deal from the referee or whether the decisions even out over the course of the match...

27th minute

Incident: Samir Nasri battles with Daniel Alves just inside the Barcelona half and the full-back puts in a stern challenge on the French midfielder and appears to get the man and the ball.

The ref's decision: No foul, play on.

Why is it controversial: Arsene Wenger was furious with the challenge which left Samir Nasri in agony on the floor. Alves did appear to get the ball but the challenge ended with what looked like a scissor tackle. It was not the first time the referee had let play continue when it appeared Barcelona had committed a foul.

The law: A direct free-kick is awarded when a player kicks or attempts to kick an opponent, trips or attempts to trip an opponent or makes contact with the opponent before touching the ball when tackling.

Goal.com verdict: The correct decision - Arsenal were getting frustrated with many of the referee's decisions regarding tackling but he got this one spot on. Alves' challenge was physical and he did catch Samir Nasri with a scissoring motion, but the important aspect is he got plenty of the ball first.

33rd minute

Incident: Abou Diaby clatters into Lionel Messi just inside the Arsenal penalty area, right under the nose of the referee.

The ref's decision: No foul, play on.

Why was it controversial:
Barcelona were pressing for a breakthrough against an Arsenal team standing firm against wave after wave of attacks and there is no doubt they should have had a penalty. The referee was standing right next to the incident and he should have seen Diaby tripping Messi inside the area.

The law: A direct free-kick is awarded when a player kicks or attempts to kick an opponent, trips or attempts to trip an opponent or makes contact with the opponent before touching the ball when tackling.

If any of these offences are committed by a player inside their own penalty area then it's a penalty.

Goal.com verdict: The wrong decision - The referee was in a great position to see the foul and he made a huge mistake in not pointing to the spot. Arsenal got away with this decision.

45th minute

Incident: Tempers start to boil over as Jack Wilshere is fairly tackled on the halfway line, but the England midfielder seems to get his ankle caught and he stays down. The Barcelona players seem to take offence to this and as a result a lot of pushing and shoving occurs. Eric Abidal appears to put his hand around Van Persie's throat during the incident.

The ref's decision:
The referee was right in the mix of the melee, trying to break up the players. He chose not to book anyone following the incident.

Why is it controversial:
On another night Abidal would have been sent from the field. He clearly raised his hands to Van Persie and had the referee seen the incident Barcelona would have had to play the second half with 10 men.

The law: A player is sent off and shown the red card if they commit violent conduct, such as throwing a punch.

Goal.com verdict:
The wrong decision - Abidal was very lucky to stay on the pitch. A few weeks ago Abou Diaby was sent off against Newcastle for exactly the same thing and no-one would have had any arguments had the French defender been given his marching orders.

46th minute

Incident: Van Persie and Alves come together deep inside the Barcelona half. The Arsenal man tries to get past his opponent, who goes down clutching his face.

The ref's decision: Foul, and booking for Van Persie.

Why is it controversial: Van Persie certainly catches Daniel Alves but the Brazilian full-back goes down very easily clutching his face. The Dutch striker appears to push Alves' shoulder and that is all he needs to make a meal of the challenge.

The law: A direct free-kick is awarded when a player kicks or attempts to kick an opponent, trips or attempts to trip an opponent, makes contact with the opponent before touching the ball when tackling, jumps at an opponent, charges an opponent, strikes or attempts to strike an opponent or pushes an opponent.

A player can receive a yellow card for anything that can be deemed as violent conduct, such as throwing a punch, unsporting behaviour or persistent infringement of the laws, for example, a series of fouls.

Goal.com verdict: The correct decision - Van Persie was playing a dangerous game lifting his hands and pushing Daniel Alves but the full-back did make a meal of the contact and played a part in the Dutchman's yellow card. It was to prove crucial as the Gunners striker was controversially given his marching orders later in the match.

56th minute

Incident: Van Persie is played in behind the Barcelona defence but is marginally offside. He is not aware of the whistle going and fires a shot wide of the goal.

The ref's decision: The referee thinks the Dutchman is time wasting and shows him a second yellow card.

Why is it controversial:
The decision upset Arsenal fans because replays showed that the time between the referee's whistle and Van Persie's shot was one second. The Dutch striker himself argued against the decision, saying he did not hear the whistle amongst the noise of 95,000 fans.

The law: The referee can give a yellow card to a player who delays the restart of play. A player can be sent off for receiving a second caution in the match.

Goal.com verdict:
The wrong decision - The referee thinks he has gone by the letter of the law but this was an absolutely ridiculous decision. Not an ounce of common sense was displayed by the referee and the fact the time between the referee's whistle and the shot was one second rubs salt into the Arsenal wound. It was the key decision and the wrong one. No-one will ever know what the outcome would have been but it certainly had an effect on the course of the game as it is hard enough to play Pep Guardiola's side with 11 men, let alone 10.

71st minute

Incident: A tired looking challenge from Laurent Koscielny sends Pedro tumbling in the box.

The ref's decision: Penalty, no yellow card.

Why is it controversial: No real controversy surrounding this decision. Arsenal could have no complaints as Koscielny clearly brought down Pedro in the box. The referee could have produced a yellow card for the French defender, which would have led to him being sent off for a second caution and the Gunners going down to nine men, but the ref chose not to brandish a card.

The law: A direct free-kick is awarded when a player kicks or attempts to kick an opponent, trips or attempts to trip an opponent or makes contact with the opponent before touching the ball when tackling.

If any of these offences are committed by a player inside their own penalty area then it's a penalty.

A player can receive a yellow card for anything that can be deemed as unsporting behaviour or persistent infringement of the laws, for example, a series of fouls.

A player can be sent off for receiving a second caution in the match.

Goal.com verdict: The correct decision - Arsenal could have no complaints about the penalty and it would have been no surprise had the referee gone to his notebook again and sent Koscielny off for a second yellow. He had booked others for much less.

'Dragon Age II' offers fantasy thrills

(CNN) -- "Dragon Age II" isn't exactly a sequel, but it does continue to thrill with new distinctive artwork, a more descriptive speech mechanic and a combat system that feels intuitive and destructive at the same time.
Where "Dragon Age: Origins" told the tale of a Grey Warden's trek to gather allies, stem the tide of the malevolent Blight (a wave of evil creatures bent on taking over) and do battle against an arch-demon, "Dragon Age II" (BioWare, Electronic Arts) showcases another wave of the story.

It starts with a family fleeing the Blight. Think of it as a branch off the "Origins" story tree to expand the "Dragon Age" universe.
You play as Hawke -- either a warrior, mage or rogue (player's choice) who is escaping with his mother, sister and brother.

The prologue does a great job of teaching combat and movement mechanics, but you also suffer your first tragedy as a family member succumbs to the Blight.
This pushes the story away from Hawke's homeland of Ferelden to the City of Chains, Kirkwall. It is there that the adventure begins in earnest, and it serves as your home base for most of the game.
Having played "Origins" on the PC, I was immediately struck by the new artwork design of some familiar characters.
The Darkspawn, which are the grunt element of the Blight, used to look similar to orcs or goblins from "The Lord of the Rings" movies. Now, they appear to be more skeletal with an almost undead look to them.
Mike Laidlaw, creative director for the "Dragon Age" series, said the game is character-driven and the team wanted the races to look unique.

"We didn't want to fall in the trap of all of the races to be humans with funny ears," he said. "Ultimately, 'Dragon Age' needs its own distinct look. One of the dangers of fantasy is, there is so much out there that it is easy to lump it all together into an elf/orc mishmash, and we wanted to stand apart."
Laidlaw credits Matthew Goldman, the art director for "Dragon Age II," with bringing a fresh, new look to the races and a desire to make the characters truly unique.
"I think there were elements of 'Origins,' especially in the appearances, that were technical masterpieces," Laidlaw explained. "But Matt felt that they weren't standing out enough. They weren't creating their own space and colonizing their visual identity in the way that he wanted."
The Quanri, a warlike race that originally appeared as large humans, also got a makeover. They retained their size and aggressive appearance, but they also sprouted horns similar to a gazelle or, as Laidlaw points out, an ogre.
One of the driving forces in the game is the interaction between the player character and his allies and other non-player characters.
Talking between characters is done through a series of choices that allow the player to take different postures in the discussions.

The speech choices are now shown with an icon that indicates the tone in which the character will speak. Laidlaw said that in "Origins," a player couldn't tell whether the choices would come out as sarcastic or aggressive and may have chosen a response that they ended up not wanting.
"We wanted a mix of the paraphrase, so you could see what you were going to say, and the statement of intent," he said. "While some of them are just tone, knowing when you are going to be funny is really key, especially when that is one of the principal tones of the game."
There are icons for peaceful/helpful, funny, aggressive, hard, romance and others.

I found myself using helpful and funny answers more than others. Laidlaw said the game recognizes those tendencies and adjusts character reactions as the game goes on.
"For example, if you find yourself constantly being a smart-aleck or making jokes, you'll find in combat that your battle cries will change. It does create a consistency of character along those core choices."
Laidlaw explained that it gives gamers a greater sense of control over their characters to shape them the way they want and a create deeper sense of immersion in the game.

The game uses a recurring interrogation scene as part of its narrative, a move Laidlaw says is intended to add perspective and depth to character development and movement of the story.
Varric, a dwarven crossbow expert and ally of Hawke's, is being questioned by Cassandra, a Templar seeking answers to some unnamed, yet often foreshadowed, tragedy surrounding Hawke.
Chapters of the game's story start and finish in the interrogation room, with Varric leading into or wrapping up the action and Cassandra reacting to what she's hearing.

It is an interesting technique and gives the game a television series feel, complete with recaps and previews. I almost felt like it was time for a commercial break to raid the fridge.
It isn't necessary to have played "Origins" to enjoy, and progress in, "Dragon Age II." But developers wanted it to retain the first game's history. Players who begin play having already saved a game of "Origins" will see differences in certain parts of the story -- from who is on the throne to the political and social situation in other kingdoms.
Game play on the Xbox 360 console feels clean and smooth, with very few hiccups or lag. The outdoor environments are colorful and detailed, but the underground caves and caverns start to feel similar, with lots of identical layouts.

Combat on the major gaming consoles utilizes two levels of mapable buttons for skills and spells, while a shortcut bar offers more choices on the PC version. Controlling the party's actions seems easier on the PC than the console, but it can be done with some practice.

Battles are as visceral and graphic as ever and the "persistent gore" setting returns, which makes for some awkward conversations. Trying to pay attention to an important bit of information is made more difficult when you are thinking, "You've got a bit of ogre on your chin."
The tactics system is carried over from "Origins," allowing you to set up character actions to occur at pre-determined thresholds or events. Characters can be set up to drink a healing potion when their health gets low without any break in the battle or gamer involvement.

"The combat is still tactical, still requires you to think as a team and not just as one character," Laidlaw said.
There is no "there's the big bad guy, go get him" mentality to how the game unfurls. It is an interactive story that allows players to grow their characters organically, from the aspects of both combat and personal development.

And it isn't a game if you're just looking for a quick turn on the console or PC. The action occurs over numerous quests, side quests and personal missions that can easily chew up 30-plus hours on a weekend as you try to complete "just one more quest."

Listen Up Arsenal - Here Are The Teams That Have Stopped Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona At The Camp Nou

2008–2009
Barcelona 1-1 Racing Santander
(September 13, La Liga)
Barcelona's disappointment at suffering a defeat to Numancia on the opening day of the season continued against Racing as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home. Guardiola's team struggled in attack and failed to make their dominance count, needing a 71st minute penalty from Lionel Messi to break the deadlock. However, six minutes later Jonathan restored parity for the visitors.
Barcelona 1-1 Basel
(November 4, Champions League)
Messi, Xavi, Samuel Eto'o, Yaya Toure and Dani Alves all were left out of the starting line-up, and subsequently Barcelona struggled upfront and lacked the cutting edge, with Thierry Henry missing a number of good chances. Messi scored on 62 minutes and Pique then rattled the crossbar with a close-range header, but with eight minutes remaining Basel's perseverance paid off when Eren Derdiyok equalised.
Barcelona 1-1 Getafe
(November 23, La Liga)
Guardiola rested a number of first team players including Messi, and this allowed Getafe to conjure up a minor upset at the Camp Nou. Gerard Pique's mistake in defence allowed Manu to give the visitors the lead on 19 minutes, and even though Keita restored parity, the equaliser came only in the 71st minute. Barca dominated the proceedings but Bojan Krkic missed a series of chances, Samuel Eto'o hit the crossbar and Roberto Abbondanzieri made a number of saves for the Azulones.
Barcelona 2-3 Shakhtar Donetsk
(December 9, Champions League)
This was the final match in the group stage of the Champions League and Arsenal could be helped if they make this defeat their template for victory. Guardiola rested a number of his regulars and fielded the likes of veteran Sylvinho as well as youngsters Víctor Vazquez and Bojan Krkic. They were easily brushed aside by the Ukranians, but Barca had already booked their place in the knockout stages.
Barcelona 1-2 Espanyol
(February 21, La Liga)
Barcelona were at a disadvantage in this derby encounter from the 38th minute onward after Seydou Keita was sent off. Two Ivan de la Pena goals in the space of four minutes early in the second half put the Blaugrana further on the back foot, and once again Barca's defence floundered.

Barcelona 0-0 Chelsea
(April 28, Champions League)
Then-Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink pledged to employ attacking tactics but the Blues started defending in numbers right from the start. The Premier League side allowed the Blaugrana to maintain possession but packed bodies in and around their penalty area, making it extremely tough for Guardiola's team to find space to weave their magic. However, a misplaced back pass by Rafael Marquez almost helped Didier Drogba score in the 38th minute. In the return leg in this semi-final tie, though, Barcelona breached Chelsea's thanks to an Andres Iniesta strike to progress to the final on away goals' rule.
Barcelona 3-3 Villarreal
(May 10, La Liga)
Barcelona were cruising to the victory and to the Spanish Primera Division title but after Eric Abidal was sent off on 77 minutes, the Blaugrana allowed a two-goal advantage to slip. Matias Fernandez's penalty and an injury time goal from Joseba Llorente saw Villarreal earn a memorable and entertaining 3-3 draw.
Barcelona 0-1 Osasuna
(May 23, La Liga)
It would be wrong to read too much into this game given that Barcelona had already secured their league title by the time they faced the relegation-threatened Pamplona side, who secured a famous 1-0 win in Catalunya.

2009–2010
Barcelona 1-2 Rubin Kazan
(October 20, Champions League)

Rubin Kazan have been Barcelona's bogey team (of sorts) in Europe since Guardiola's reign began, and they were the first team in 2009-10 to defeat the all-conquering Catalans at the Camp Nou. It was a masterclass in defensive rigidity from the Tatars, who played on the counter, made their chances count and stifled the then-European champions from playing too much productive passing football.
Barcelona 1-1 Villarreal
(January 2, La Liga)
Barcelona started the game with confidence and took the lead after just seven minutes through Pedro and continued to run the show, but once David Fuster had equalised for Villarreal six minutes into the second-half the Blaugrana started to flounder and lost their fluidity, and in the end were lucky to escape with a point.

Barcelona 1-2 Sevilla

(January 5, Copa del Rey)
Barcelona were without regular centre-backs Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique in their starting line-up and Sevilla, with their style of playing with a certain degree of physical strength and briskness, had Diego Capel, Diego Perotti and to some extent Jesus Navas making use of the extra space afforded by Dani Alves' and Maxwell's adventurous runs. Sevilla would often work closely in the middle and spread the ball wide to stretch Barcelona, and then play with intensity and momentum.
2010–2011
Barcelona 0-2 Hercules
(September 11, La Liga)
Hercules pulled off the shock of the 2010-11 Spanish Primera Division season in week 2 as Nelson Valdez struck twice to inflict a rare defeat upon Barca at the Camp Nou. Other than this being a case of one of those romantic upsets - a footballing version of David slaying Goliath - this match saw Hercules take their chances, punish the Spanish champions for not exploiting theirs and expose the truth that without their regulars the Blaugrana are not formidable.
Barcelona 1-1 Mallorca
(October 3, La Liga)
Xavi was injured and David Villa suspended, and Barcelona struggled to break down an organised Mallorca side for whom Emilio Nsue cancelled out Messi's 21st minute lead just before half time. Bojan hit the visitors' post but it didn't hide that the Blaugrana struggled and were depending on Messi more than they should have been.
Barcelona 0-0 Athletic Bilbao
(December 21, Copa Del Rey)
Joaquin Caparros's Athletic Bilbao were resolute in defence, playing with a back-four shielded by a five-man midfield, and the Basque giants produced a brilliant performance to hold Barca to a goalless draw in the first-leg of this round-of-16 tie. Athletic's discipline restricted Barca from playing their passing football and frustrated the Spanish champions.

Female 'Empowerment' Is Great — Except When it Comes to Smoking

What does "empowerment" mean for women around the globe? More smoking deaths, for one. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) reports that in countries where more women work in government office, have equal voting rights and relative parity to men in terms of income, women also smoke more.

The UNDP measured levels of national female empowerment in 74 countries. In countries with poor female empowerment scores, like China, Pakistan, Uganda and Saudi Arabia, men were five times more likely to smoke than women. By contrast, in countries like Australia, Canada, Sweden and the U.S., where women have made great strides toward gender equality, the unfortunate side effect is a parity of a different kind: women smoke almost as much as men do.

The study [PDF], published Tuesday in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, was the first to compare female empowerment and smoking rates. Going forward, rates of smoking in women are expected to rise in poor countries, closing the gender gap. Wrote the researchers:
While women's smoking prevalence rates are currently
lower than men's, they are projected to rise in many low- and middle-income countries. Data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey show that worldwide smoking rates among boys and girls resemble each other more than smoking rates among adult women and men, with boys between the ages of 13 and 15 years smoking only 2 to 3 times more than girls.
The Tobacco Free Initiative at WHO chose 2010 as the year to focus on the relationship between gender and tobacco use, given tobacco companies' aggressive marketing campaigns targeting women. "This study highlights the need to act quickly to curb smoking among women, particularly in developing countries," Dr. Douglas Bettcher, director of the Tobacco Free Initiative, said in a statement. "The tobacco epidemic is still in its early stages in many countries but is expected to worsen. Strong tobacco control measures such as bans on tobacco advertising are needed to prevent the tobacco industry from targeting women."

Worldwide, smoking kills 5 million people each year and is predicted to kill 1 billion people this century.
